Background of the Study
Pragmatic analysis is crucial for understanding the contextual use of language, particularly in dynamic and informal settings such as social media and everyday conversation. Nigerian Pidgin, widely used across Nigeria, is characterized by its fluid grammar, extensive code-switching, and rich cultural idioms (Adeleke, 2023). Computational approaches to pragmatic analysis—such as machine learning algorithms, sentiment analysis, and discourse parsing—have shown potential in capturing these contextual nuances. However, the informal and rapidly evolving nature of Nigerian Pidgin poses significant challenges for automated analysis. Historical and contemporary corpora indicate that pragmatic markers in Nigerian Pidgin vary greatly across regions and social groups (Okoro, 2024). Recent advancements in NLP have begun to incorporate context-aware models that better understand these subtleties (Nwachukwu, 2025). This study appraises the computational methods currently employed to analyze pragmatic aspects of Nigerian Pidgin discourse, evaluating their accuracy and limitations, and proposing enhancements tailored to the language’s distinctive features.
Statement of the Problem
Despite advancements in computational pragmatic analysis, current models often fail to fully capture the nuanced discourse of Nigerian Pidgin. The informal language, rapid evolution, and high degree of code-switching result in frequent misinterpretations by automated systems (Adeleke, 2023). Limited annotated corpora and inadequate context modeling exacerbate these challenges (Okoro, 2024). This gap in reliable pragmatic analysis tools hinders effective language research, sentiment analysis, and digital communication strategies.
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it advances our understanding of computational pragmatic analysis in Nigerian Pidgin. The research will provide insights for improving NLP tools that process informal language, benefiting social media analysis, market research, and language preservation efforts. The findings will assist linguists, developers, and policymakers in designing systems that more accurately reflect the cultural and contextual richness of Nigerian Pidgin.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on computational methods for pragmatic analysis in Nigerian Pidgin discourse and does not extend to other linguistic levels or languages.
